TIMELINE
● Late 12th / early 13th century
A small settlement is established next to a ford across the Ostravice River.
● 1267–1278
The town of Ostrava is founded.
The first buildings are constructed in what later became the Lauby area.
● End of the 13th century – 15th century
Buildings made from wood and clay stand on the site.
They are among Ostrava’s most valuable buildings thanks to their location on the town’s main street.
● 1556
Ostrava suffers a great fire. The entire block of buildings appears to have been destroyed.
● Up to the end of the 17th century
The wood-and-clay buildings are gradually rebuilt as masonry structures.
● 1770s
The first house-numbering system in Ostrava is introduced. The buildings at Lauby are numbered from 4 (on the corner of Velká Street and Dlouhá Street) up to 9 (on the corner of Velká Street and Muzejní Street).
● 1840s
The buildings are renumbered, becoming no. 54 (on the corner of Velká Street and Muzejní Street) up to no. 59 (on the corner of Velká Street and Dlouhá Street). This exhibition uses the new numbering system.
● 1842
A new street (nowadays 28. října Street) is created. As a result, Velká Street loses its former importance.
● 1939–1945
The buildings are acquired by the city. The Nazi authorities plan to demolish the entire block, but these plans are not yet implemented.
● Up to 1964
All the buildings on the block are demolished.
The former Lauby site is used as a parking lot, and it remains vacant until the “New Lauby” residential development is built in 2024.
