STŘEDA 27. 5., 17 h | Beseda s prof. Barbarou Szargot věnovaná Henryku Sienkiewiczovi, nositeli Nobelovy ceny za literaturu z roku 1905. Sienkiewicz psal „k povzbuzení srdcí“ v době, kdy Polsko na mapě světa neexistovalo. Vytvářel obrazy národní slávy a cti, ale také utvářel stereotypy Poláků přežívající u českých čtenářů v podstatě dodnes.
THE ARCADES
We do not know exactly when the first covered arcades were built outside the houses (first of wood, and later of stone). The arcades were probably added during the 18th century, and possibly earlier in the case of house no. 54. The arcades were located not only on Velká Street, but also on what is now Ostrava’s central square (Masarykovo náměstí). The arcades (known locally as lauby, hence the name given to the entire area) were rented to market traders and stallholders who sold bakery goods, sweets, butcher’s products, and clothes. The last surviving remnant of the original arcades is located outside the entrance to the Ostrava Museum.
