ARCHEOLOGICAL RESEARCH AT LAUBY
Archeologists carried out research at the former Lauby site in connection with the plans for the “New Lauby” residential development. The research took place in several phases from 2017 to 2022, with the majority of the work being done from 2019 to 2021. It was not possible to carry out a complete survey of the entire site due to later building work that had taken place in the intervening centuries. The main focus of the archeological excavation was on the former parcel of house no. 54, which had been less affected than its neighbours by the demolition process and by previous building work. Especially in the front part of the parcel, the archeological layers had survived intact down to a considerable depth – in some places as deep as 3 metres.
Before the excavation could begin, detailed historical and archive research was carried out. Besides archeologists, the research team also included experts on the historical development of masonry structures and the geomorphology of floors, an archeobotanist, a parasitologist, a geologist, and more. Thanks to this collaboration between different scientific disciplines, we have been able to gain a clearer picture of how people lived in medieval Ostrava. The research did not end with the archeological excavation. It is still continuing behind the scenes, in laboratories where the samples are being investigated and preserved.
