DEMOLITION

Demolition work began in the rear part of the block, facing onto Pivovarská Street. Heritage experts protested against the demolition, but they only succeeded in delaying the work for a few months. The bulldozers then moved in and cleared the entire site. The above-ground parts of the buildings were removed completely, the ceilings of the cellars were demolished, and the cellar spaces were filled with rubble. When demolition on one parcel was complete, the bulldozers moved on to the neighbouring parcel. The demolition left a large vacant space in the very heart of the city. There were plans to build a parking garage on the site, but they were never implemented. For more than half a century, the former Lauby site was used as an open-air parking lot.
