PROSTITUTION
Prostitution in the Lauby area was practised either in taverns or on the streets. Innkeepers employed more waitresses than was necessary; some of them (known as “animators”) were tasked with attracting customers by any means necessary and encouraging them to consume and spend as much as possible. They then offered sexual services to drunken patrons.
Ostrava’s councillors considered prostitution to be a socially beneficial profession, as prostitutes and brothels met the needs of lonely manual labourers. The first attempts to regulate prostitution and bring the women under medical and police supervision began in 1898, when prostitutes were registered and had to attend regular medical check-ups. These took place in the city hall itself – the building now occupied by the Ostrava Museum.
