HISTORIC ART COLLECTIONS
The best and the most precious exhibits are exposed in the section of the museum dedicated to art historical collections. We can find here old prints, rare wooden sculptures, paintings and statues. Handicrafts are represented by objects made by tin, clocks and watches and porcelain. A separate room is dedicated to the collection of militaries – hunting, military, oriental, cold and target weapons, pistols and revolvers.
PAINTINGS and SCULPTURES, OLD PRINTS
The old art is represented mainly by two large canvases by an anonymous master from the Belgian town of Mechelen: St. George’s Kermesse and its counterpart – an iconographical more complex scene with the departure (or arrival?) of the prodigal son (Farewell to Parents). Both from 1608. The St. George’s Kermesse canvas was restored in 2005.
The Jan van Kassel’s canvas Still-life with a Parrot is very exclusive too. The work of this Flemish painter from the 17th century is a continuation and development of the tradition started by his grandfather, who was none less than Jan Brueghel called Velvet. The theme of Kessel's paintings is composed of fauna (especially insects), flower garlands, bouquets, but also mythological scenes, often almost impenetrably encoded. This is undoubtedly the most valuable work kept in the collections of the Ostrava Museum!
The Ostrava Museum's sculpture collection was built up by purchases and donations. It contains artefacts from the late Gothic to the present day. The most precious is the sculpture Kneeling Boy by Georgie Minne (1906) made of marble.
The collection of manuscripts and old prints is rare not only in its scope but especially in its historical value. The library collects, preserves and protects 548 titles of old prints from Czech, German and Polish provenience. Most of them are from the 19th century, some of them date back to the 16th–18th centuries. The collection is based on works with religious themes – biblical prints, canticles, prayer books, liturgical hymns and other spiritual books. A rare old print of the collection is the Czech Bible, published in 1549 by the publisher Jiří Melantrich.
