LIGHT AND DARKNESSDuring the Middle Ages, the main source of light (apart from the sun) was fire. Various types of equipment were used for lighting, especially those that made fire portable, such as lanterns, torches, lamps or candles. Lamps with wicks were particularly popular. They were shallow bowl-shaped vessels containing fat, with a wick that burned to provide a source of light. They did not illuminate the rooms very effectively. |
