These luxurious, intricately crafted figures represent the Japanese emperor, empress and their court. They are the centrepiece of the annual Hinamatsuri (Doll Festival). The dolls wear magnificent, hand-sewn kimonos in the style of the Heian period (794–1185). The emperor (Odairi-sama) and empress (Ohina-sama) sit on raised platforms. The making of these highly prized works of art has a centuries-old tradition in Japan, and antique examples, including those from the Meiji period (1868–1912), are sought-after collectors’ items.
