HEATING

The oldest medieval houses were heated using just an open fire, meaning that the heated space was also full of smoke. A major change in household culture came with the invention of the tiled stove. First built in the 9th and 10th centuries, tiled stoves did not become widespread in Ostrava until the last third of the 15th century. They were safer than an open fire, provided more heat, and vented the smoke out from the living area, creating a cleaner and more pleasant indoor environment. A large quantity of tiles from the first half of the 16th century were found at the Lauby site.
