WATER SUPPLY![]() The availability of a water supply was essential for the town to function properly. Water was used not only for daily household tasks, but also for brewing beer and for various trades and crafts. In the Middle Ages, water was taken mainly from wells, but in the modern era gravity pipelines were introduced. The oldest water pipeline in Ostrava, evidently dating from before the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648), channelled water to a fountain in the square. However, large-scale construction of wooden pipelines dates from the 1820s onwards. In 1826, one of these pipelines delivered water to the fountain via the garden of house no. 54; it was recently unearthed during the archeological excavations at the site. ← Back Next → |
