Japan in Ostrava

When a Distant World Becomes Part of the City

Japan is more than a country on the other side of the world. In Ostrava, it can be experienced firsthand—through festivals, a Japanese café, language classes, and everyday encounters with people who share a passion for its culture.

Over the past decade, a vibrant community has emerged, bringing together two worlds that may seem very different at first glance. Japanese artists regularly visit Ostrava, tea ceremonies and traditional music performances take place throughout the year, and local residents discover Japan through direct, personal experience.

This exhibition presents three dimensions of this cultural exchange:

• Education and cultural engagement (Czech–Japanese Cultural Centre)
• Everyday life and personal encounters (Heiwa Kafé)
• Public celebration and shared experiences (Festival Japanese Days in Ostrava)

Together, they offer a unique portrait of Japan—not only as a culture to admire, but as one that can be experienced, explored, and shared.
